Many products claim to help the guys bring back the shiny mane of their young days. But only a handful of those seem to work. And you do not need to lighten your wallet on worthless shampoos and supplements in the quest for a more complete head of hair.

There is no cure for baldness, but these options can help you keep it at bay if you gradually lose hair. The best time to use them is before you have lost a lot. So when you start noticing the locks cleared up, check with your doctor what you can do.
A Hair Loss Pill

Blowing a pill to thwart hair thinning may seem too good to be true, but it is possible with finasteride (Propecia). The drug works by lowering the levels of a hormone that shrinks the hair follicles, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

It slows down hair loss in about 88% of men and helps hair regrowth in about 66%. You need a doctor's prescription to get finasteride, which you take every day. Be patient, however: It may take 6 months to see the results, because hair loss and growth occur slowly.

In clinical trials for the drug, about 3% of men have had some side effects, including a libido and other sexual problems. It is possible that these problems may continue after discontinuation of therapy. Keep in mind, too, that pregnant women should not handle pills - touching broken or crushed tablets can cause birth defects in babies.

A Rub-In Remedy

It is not as easy to use as a daily pill, but minoxidil (Rogaine), a liquid that you rub into your scalp, is another option. It is approved by the FDA to grow hair, but doctors think it may be better to help you hold on to the strands that you already have.

Minoxidil works best for men under 40 who have started to lose hair recently. You should use it for at least 4 months, and maybe up to a year, before you see if it works. Although many experts do not recommend minoxidil as the first treatment to try, it is an option for guys who have not gotten the help of finasteride or would like to add another product to their diet.

You apply the medicine twice a day to dry hair. Applicators make the process less messy. You can buy it over the counter and in stronger prescription versions. The main side effect is irritation of the scalp.

High-tech solutions?

How about brushes, combs, and other laser-like devices that you can get in a living room or at home? Doctors do not agree on how this works.

The FDA classifies them as medical devices, so they do not have to have the same thorough tests as medications. This means that scientists do not really know how safe and effective they are.

Once you decide to try some hair loss treatments, it may take some time before you find out whether they are working for you or not. The best way to know is to use the drugs exactly as the instructions say. If you do not get the results you are looking for, you can talk with a dermatologist about other procedures that may help, such as a hair transplant.
